I am afraid that the uncontrolled growth of big buildings in Pakistan will only contribute to more pollution and congestion. In Islamabad for instance the infrastructure including existing roads can hardly accomodate the planned buildings such as the Centaurus. There has to be more care taken to ensure that we won’t just become victims of greater congestion and grid lock because the city planners are oking all kinds of construction without any proper assessment of the available infrastructure. I travelled to both Lahore, Pindi and Islamabad during my last trip home and I was disappointed with the amount of traffic and congestion in all of these cities. Peshawar hadn’t changed much but Lahore and Pindi were horrible in terms of traffic and grid lock. As for the once green and serene Islamabad, I was taken aback by how much congestion has taken over. By all means build in Pakistan’s urban centres but let’s have planned growth with some type of civic vision!

I am still very optimistic about Pakistan’s economic growth. One thing I am very worried is the political instability. Pakistan government must take major steps not baby steps to control the situation, if economic growth like mentioned above with spectacular pictures of dream Pakistan. My opinion, number one priority should be to educate our young beautiful children no matter what part of the sector they come from. Success will follow, there is no doubt about it and make no mistake about it.

I agree with Al; as important as it is to build a stable infrastructure we need fucntioning institutions. I am so placed that the Chief Justice was re instated; It shows there is still some law left in Pakistan and people who love the country. Let’s build a civil society with fucntioning insitutions- we won’t have the curse of another illiterate army General like Musharaf seizing power through coups!
July 24th, 2007 at 7:38 pm
This is for Mr. Mahmood.
If you have not notice this yet, then allow me to open your mind. Since General Musharaf took over the country, we as a country doing much better in economy, jobs and also fixing education structure all over Pakistan. Reinstating a Judge does not make us any better. We need new faces in the entire government including the judiciary system, and the F***ing Politician’s need to change. We (all Pakistanis) need to think about the future, we need to build the future, we as a whole nation needs to think about over kids and their kids futures. We also need to stop blaming the issues in Pakistan on other countries, and different religions within the country or abroad. Pakistan’s future is in EDUCATION, Musharaf is doing a great job in that regards. What he is lacking is that he needs to come up with NEW LAWS, NEW REFORMS, and a WAY TO MINIMIZE CORRUPTION IN POLITICS. We all know that we can’t get rid of corruption until the people of Pakistan step up and say no this time and fight for there right to EDUCATE them self. We need to show all Pakistanis that we can accomplish more in the country if we just do it TOGETHER. “ONE FINGER OF YOUR HAND CANNOT MAKE MY FACE BLEED, BUT ALL FINGERS TOGETHER CAN PUT ANYTHING DOWN.” AND we can not to anything if our mullahs support parties or have any voice in how to run the country. They should teach Muslims about Islam rather then make up their own theories on who should die or forced to convert to Islam. Only Allah (subane-wa-talla) makes those decisions. Just Support the government and help the government into making Pakistan a better nation, what we orginial fough for.
July 24th, 2007 at 8:01 pm
If you supported the nation you wouldn’t say support a dictator who abrogated the consititution. A man who breaks laws and seizes power shows no respect for a nation and his uniform. Think about his oath when he first put on that uniform. How can an illiterate Military General run civil society. Do you not feel shame when the head of every public utility abd government board is a retired General. There are plenty of telented Pakistanis in our society outside the military. By the way the same Generals are part of the society of corrupt politicians. Don’t kid yourself- those of us who have family in the Army can tell you about members in different parties and in different branches of the military. They are swimmin in the same sea and they hedge their bets. The true future of Pakistan is in building and respecting institutions; I’m not waiting for a leader- we are all Pakistan and we should all work together to build a societal infrastructure. As for the illiterate Mullahs and the illiterate Generals, they are both sides of the same coin if you ask me. That retard Musharraf has made himself a laughing stock in the world by his backtracking and asinine comments. It hurts me as a patriotic Pakistani to be lead by a clown who makes our country look like a Banana Republic. He has hurt so many insitutions, including the proud Pakistani Army. He deserves nothing short of being charged with treason. As for your economic indices, ask anyone who lives in Pakistan- there is more poverty and a greater gap between rich and poor. Despite Musharraf’s lottery of being in the War on Terror and all his blood money. Daily expenses are horrible for average folks, inflated economic figures seem to fool some but not all who are told a different story by independent international analysts. Wake up and smell the coffee - don’t be fooled by this corrupt nasal speaking clown Musharraf!
July 26th, 2007 at 12:40 pm
Nice imaginations. But, firts we need to learn how to utilize our resources and learn how to manage. Just building tall and big building does not say any thing about the country. We have lot of other problems, we should fix those first.
July 26th, 2007 at 10:57 pm
As far as the gap between Rich and Poor, that is because of our own people. No one seems to blame the public who don’t help the country or even their cities. Any way point is that Musharaf might not be the smartest of people in Army, but he did more good for the FUTURE of the country then any other President before him. Think about the development of the country, and if numbers are not good enough for you then take a tour towards the Beloch area and Sindh area.
July 26th, 2007 at 11:06 pm
Mohsin, your loyalty should be towards Pakistan- not some ignorant General who seized Pakistan unlawfully. If we love Pakistan, we must respect her consitution, her laws and her founding principles. A nation which was formed by the work of a consitutional lawyer- now the corrupt Generals challenge the role of lawyers and judges in the political arena! Once we have a functioning infrastructure- I’m not talking about a physical infrastructure- our prosperity and development will take off. Read the analyses of the New York Times and the Washington Post on increased lawlessness in Pakistan. There is a good case to show that a military dictatorship fosters a lack of respect for civil society and laws becasue they behave as though they are above the law. Love Pakistan first man- we all now that the clown Musharraf is on his way out- it’s a matter of time but I say he should be charged in court with treason; not lynched by angry mobs but through the courts to send the message to the world that we are a civilized people.
July 27th, 2007 at 12:23 am
Again, i totally understand what u r saying and agreed to it. But let’s ask over self about the corruption in the court system itself. Pakistan needs to be a civil society, for us to get there we need to change a lot, including current government and the court system we have as well as those who’s been sitting on it for so long and did nothing to fix it or to even try to make it better. To bring a change to the whole country is not as easy as these words I’m writing, but we need a leader, and a leader who’s actions will be louder then word. I’m not saying that Musharaf is that leader, but it’s defiantly not our current court system. So who can we trust to lead Pakistan into a civil society? n plz don’t name any current parties
July 27th, 2007 at 1:15 am
I am not a partisan of any political party of Pakistan- I am just in favour of developing a system. Once we have a system in place political leaders won’t matter that much. We as a people have become obsessed with leaders whereas we collectively form the nation. In the West political leaders and parties come and go but the system remains intact. That’s my dream for Pakistan. To watch the PPP come in one year to be followed by the PML to be follwed by the TI and who cares who else. Let any party who is elected come and serve out their term- corrupt or not so that we as a people can learn. I frankly don’t care if Nawaz, Benazir or Imran were to come into power- I would welcome any one of them because it would be through our political process. Believe me two or three cycles of bad democracy and we would get the hang of it. I don’t believe that the current generation of Pakistanis is that stupid. We are a lot more intelligent than the dictator gives us credit for. What’s sad is that the military refuses the nation to evolve in the year 2007!
July 27th, 2007 at 12:42 pm
i am plasently amazed and static to see these pictures. being as a pakistani i want pakistan to be the king of south asia.
July 27th, 2007 at 7:36 pm
Well let c, we’ve been a democracy nation for last 60 years like India. We do have a system in place for our government. All the past government were using it, n let c if we can calculate the success of the country while they were in office. Don’t forget EDUCATION, JOBS, and ECONOMY is what people use to measure success. If You think that Musharaf is Destroying the country, I can agree to that. Telling me that it’s ok to have the old politician return to power is plan dumb. The public is stupid to elect the same politician back or again to destroy the country even more. These current parties don’t do shit for public or the country, n we still support them. “Oh! Musharaf is a dictator we can’t have a Democracy while he is in power”, who ever say that r absolutely right. But to elect any current party in the country is even worst. They come in power and only think about them self, their families and their businesses. But who will help the rest of those people in the country. Is Musharaf any better then them, NO he is also benefiting his family and doing a lot for himself, but @ the same time he is much F***ing better then these past politicians. Wrong is wrong, Musharaf is worng in breaking laws n taking lot of advantage form the power. @ the same time he is using the same power to help others, espacially lot of business in Pakistan. He is working on Education. What he should do is step down n hand all his power over but before he does that, Public needs to find some one they can trust. If u ask me this will be the MOST IMPORTANT DECISION any PAKISTANI will make to elect someone who is good 4 the country.
July 28th, 2007 at 5:06 am
I think you underestimate our public- it’s all fine and well to say that the public is illiterate and stupid but let me tell you your average villager is a great deal more intelligent in terms of common sense, wisdom and integrity. We don’t give the average Pakistani enough credit nor do we challenge them with being participants in the national destiny. Have you often noticed that expatriate Pakistanis from villages invariably are hard working and pay taxes while a great number of our so called educated and wealthier class are involved in scams or welfare (Engineers, pharmacists and doctors). The large number of expatriate army men settled in North America and Europe buying businesses with looted money. Let’s face it most military families have an equal number of folks in top spots of political families. I am not going to mention names beacuse I am sure that my family is no way unique. We all have stories of so and so who is getting this or that - for a man like me who has the greatest respect for the Pakistani Armed Forces it is painful to see the rampant corruption and collusion taking place under Musharraf. I am sure that you know as many retired and even younger Pakistani military men doing all manner of bsuineses in North America and Europe. Be that as it may, be I still believe the situation will remedy itself with several cycles of elections; Why? The greater proportion of our populace are now young people under 25- I have more faith in our new generation and their wishes to see a civil society in Pakistan. Through the media and the internet, we are well aware of the goings on in today’s world- it cannot be held from our public- this fact alone demands that we engage the public in our fudamental challege of creating a civil society. We don’t live in a vacuum and our young want to hold their heads high in the comity of world nations- not be a comedy lead by an illiterate clown of a dictator. I think its highly judgemental to say that all of the current political parties care nothing for Pakistan and the public. They too are from the same families and society. I don’t care for any party but I care for our constitution. Again I take you back to the question of what happens in politics anywhere- politicians corrupt or otherwise are given a term in office- if they fulfill the tenets of their mandate they are re elected- otherwise the public sends them packing. The army never lets any elected governement complete its term so how can you say what will happen. As for the crisies affecting the country, most observers would say Musharraf is dragging us into deeper problems. I have been influenced by my readings on the evolution of civil society through the engagment of people directly in thier own futures.
July 28th, 2007 at 2:40 pm
Mahmood I totally agree with u and completely disagree with Mohsin. Musharraf has totally “RUINED” our country! He has done nothing at all except be a slave to the US. He has no mind of his own and just does waht Bush tells him to do. Really I think our country was in a better position when Nawaz Sharif was there. Islam is slowly leaving the country ppl. Its about time you open your eyes and realize how much wrong Musharraf really has done and is doing!!

It is awesome…LUV IT…Proud to b a PAKISTANI
July 30th, 2007 at 4:58 am
I don’t think we can truly be proud of our nation by virtur of buildings and achitecture. I would prefer to be proud of my nation based on her overall impression as a cilvil society. When wwe learn to respect our fellow citizens as equals under a common law with a consitution that we all adhere to and respect. Let’s love our country by all deciding to follow our laws and to respect our insitutions. We do it abroad- let’s do it at home. Many Pakistanis spend part of the year abroad and part of the year at home; we follow civic laws and respect insitutions when we’re in the developed West but think little of interfering with institutions and processes at home. We are all Pakistan and collectively we mould our future. Let’s make Pakistan the envy if the world by showing that we are a nation of principles. Frankly I don’t care about big buildings and outward expressions of progress when our fundamentals need to be strengthened. Love Pakistan and her consitution. Bring back civil society.
August 4th, 2007 at 2:44 am
Help build a Pakistan we all can be proud of and let’s worry about buildings when our nation’s laws and consitution need a strong foundation.

Hi,
Myself from India.
Although I m from India still I m a big fan of Pakistan. But at this point of time by showing future building you can not be proud to be a Pakistani.Your country is loosing her respect in the World.
“PAKI” has become abuse in English language.
So all the Pakistani will have to prove the world that we are cilised people & can do anything better than the “WEST”.
India got her independence at the same time when Pakistan got it but see today where the INDIA is.
So lets commit it to yourself that you all will contribute something to build the nation. Don’t see what others are doing just focus what you are suppose to do for the betterment of your nation.

I am a pakistani living in Sweden.
I like skyscrapers but I dont understand why Pakistan has to build these expensive projects now. I think Pakistan
need to improve the basic infrastructure first, like roads, subway, electricity, internet connections, this will increase business and demand for more office space.
November 4th, 2008 at 11:51 pm
Hi,
I m a Pakistani..
I like these buildings as we need such type of skyscrapers…. But sometime i think how we provide these buildings basic facilities like electricity??? We can mod these buildings as self power producing buildings… and second we cannot proud to be paki on these buildings till we cant empower self respect for others, law and the most Time..
