The United States said on Thursday the bid by Pakistan’s coalition to impeach President Pervez Musharraf, a close ally of Washington, was “the internal politics of Pakistan internal affair.” “We have consistently said the internal politics of Pakistan is an issue for the Pakistani people to decide,” State Department spokesman Gonzago Gallegos told reporters. “Our expectation is that any action will be consistent with the rule of law and the Pakistani constitution,” Gallegos said. Pakistan’s coalition announced earlier in the day to impeach Musharraf immediately because of his poor economic policies that had led to an economic impasse during his rule in the past years. The incumbent president also has been criticized for his policies that have weakened the federation and democratic process. Musharraf denied the charges, and warned that the impeachment could destabilize the country. The Bush administration attaches great importance to its cooperation with Pakistan in the anti-terrorism war. In May, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said U.S. President George W. Bush expect President Musharraf to continue his role in further strengthening U.S.-Pakistani relations. source: Xinhua News
