Thousands of American lawyers call for rule of law in Pakistan

More than 10,000 American lawyers have signed a petition, with more expected to join them, to President Pervez Musharraf urging him to “restore the Constitution of Pakistan, reinstate Pakistan’s Supreme Court justices and free those lawyers and civil leaders who have been wrongly jailed.” The petition prepared by the American Bar Association, will be presented to the embassy of Pakistan on 13 December by Association president William H Neukom, who said in a statement that “each day, pressure brought by Americans and people of other nations is forcing Pakistani leader Pervez Musharraf to soften his assault on the rule of law. But he has failed to address some of his most destructive actions.” With more than 413,000 members, the American Bar Association is believed to be the largest voluntary professional membership organisation in the world. As the national voice of the legal profession, the Association works to improve the administration of justice, promotes programmes to assist lawyers and judges in their work, accredits law schools, provides continuing legal education, and works to build public understanding around the world of the importance of the rule of law.- [By Khalid Hasan via DailyTimes] Please share your views below…

What a pity? Don’t we have even a single civilian in Pakistan worthy of being the head of a Civilian Dept.? Everywhere Retd. Generals…..Everywhere…
Pakistan’s name should be changed to “Generalstan”. Army does not have any contribution in the independence of Pakistan. It was the civil society and lawyers under the guidance of great Quaid who sacrificed their lives to get their “own” country, which is now owned rather captured solely by Army. We (civilians) pay the taxes to feed our army, which already is sucking more than 70% of Pakistan’s annual budget and resources. Still their lust of power remains unfulfilled!
Musharraf is so desperate and afraid of being called a civilian that he has refused to leave the Army house. I am surprised why new Army Chief “Kianai” is behaving like a “Zanani”? It seems that Kianai is only a dummy, the original power still rests with Mush backed by Bush.
Pakistan Army does not have the courage to fight against enemy, whenever they fought they lost. That’s the main reason they keep themselves busy in fighting against their own people and conquering their own mosques, judiciary and media. Shame shame (Nanga nanga shame shame….)
Musharraf’s deeds and army’s support for him has tarnished Pakistan Army’s name so badly which no more enjoys any respect at all, not only in the country but in the entire world.
Army is the mother of corruption and all social evils and injustices in Pakistan. Being a Pakistani I am really ashamed of their acts!!!
The only way Army can mend their lost dignity is to throw away Mush from the power, invalidate the PCO (Pervez’s Constitutional Order) and restore the Judiciary as of 2nd November 2007. Mr. Kiani! you have to act fast.. now or never…

I heard that illiterate Musharraf bought a 60 million vip jet for his personal use even though we have 13 vip jets already. The problem is that corrupt General is worse than corrupt politician becasue you undermine development of whole society. We forget that these corrupt military officers are from same society- not foreign. They have same looting mind set and cheap language as the politicians. The politicians at least have some democratic credentials and give the nation some hope of evolving. 2 or 3 cycles of bad democracy and we will learn about the system if only the army doesn’t keep stepping in and destroying any semblance of civil society. That’s why we are ranked so low in the world despite getting billions in aid. What use is aid when our fundamentals are weak.
Read Dawn from a few days back about an average guy who booked his daughter’s wedding at a hall 1 year back. The fellows reservation was cancelled on the spot as soon as a General decided his daughter should be married the same place. He didn’t care that it was booked.
Musharraf has proved more dangerous to the stability of Pakistan than any elected politician. I still hope Imran changes his mind and runs the country instead of this illiterate dictator!

IF IT WAS ME, I WOULD HAVE FIXED THESE PAKI LAWYERS AND WOULD HAVE GOT BEATEN THE DAYLIGHTS OUT OF THEM, WHICH WOULD HAVE SHOWN THEM THE STARS IN THE DAY.
