President Pervez Musharraf Thursday expressed his resolve to lift the state of emergency from the country on December 16, 2007 and take back PCO.

Addressing the nation on the state run television after taking oath earlier on Thursday as civilian president of Pakistan, he said: “It is my intention to lift the state of emergency from the country on Dec 16, withdraw PCO the same day and hold the general elections as per the announced schedule and according to the Constitution.”

He appreciated the ex-prime minister of Pakistan, Shaukat Aziz and ex-members of the Cabinet, saying they successfully run the state of affairs of the country for the past five years in highly challenging circumstances.

“Whatever I have done so far and will do in future will have one and only purpose and that is to upheld the interest of the country,”
President Musharraf claimed.

He said the political parties should participate in the upcoming elections and not consider boycotting the same.

The President said the military operation is being undertaken successfully after imposition of state emergency and the crack down on the terrorists in Swat has also met success.

Referred to the circumstances which according to him made the declaration of emergency in the country as the last resort, he said the decision in this regard was on the principle of “Pakistan comes first”.

President Musharraf said the Parliament elected him with 57 percent majority and attempts were made to counter the same and hurdles were created in the autonomy of the Parliament.

In the meantime, a wave of terrorism which emerged from tribal areas reached to the settled areas. Suicide bombings occurred while certain sections of media added fuel to the fire. “These circumstances posed real threat to the integrity of the country, the economy also seemed to be affected by this danger,” he said.

“The difficult decision to impose emergency in the country was made after consulting all the stakeholders,”
said the President.

He said he is glad to have become civilian President of the country and also because the derailed democracy is now back on track.

He said his re-election has now been declared legal, date of elections has been announced as January 8, and now he has relinquished the Army post as promised to the people. “Whatever I am it is because of the people and armed forces of Pakistan,” President Pervez Musharraf pointed out, adding “This force ensures protection to the solidarity of the country and I am proud of the Armed Forces of Pakistan.”
The President said the people of Swat extended their maximum cooperation to the armed forces and he is thankful to them for the same.

“National is reconciliation is necessary if we want to take Pakistan on the path of progress and it is in this context that Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif were allowed to come back to the country and they have been provided a level playing field,”
he clarified.

He said he is the one who gave freedom to the media and it is his commitment due to which dozens of channels are now being watched in the country.- [via TheNews]

ALHAMDOLLILAH, at last we are returning towards the days of normacy. Gash! if this all had not happened, we have not lost our economic progress path, Stock Market crash….

  2. SBE Says:

Short term economic progress means nothing when the fundamental stability of country is in question. When you work to build a stable system long term progress follows- not short term gain due to US aid. We need to separate fact from fiction and look for long term interest of Pakistan. As people we see only short term and that is our problem. Even in India they invested in centres of higher study that would pay rewards many years later. By building system in Pakistan we don;t have to worry about 2 or 3 years stcok going up or down due to aid or world economy- our own ecoonomy and country will be seen as good society and people will naturally want to invest and develop. No body invest in dictatorship or failed state- this is real truth we must understand. We must not look for overnight fix by dictator or hero but build stable long term system. This is only possible when we all build insitutions in a normal stable society- Inshallah we will have one soon when army goes back to barracks. I hope Kayani is professional and knows what is improtant for Pak and not only care about own ego and army businesses.

President Musharraf has always been a very sympathetic man. He is extremely considerate, and as a result he spares the worst of law-breakers.
We do not like this side to his personality. Why is he so lenient? In all his 8 years, there is nobody, who was persecuted. Javed Hashmi was imprisoned because he went too far, and was really asking for trouble. His crime was as bad as treason.

  4. Danny Says:

Pakistani people live like in primitive times. It is very difficult to tell, what ticks them and why they become so ungrateful? Why they don’t have the ability to see and recognize what is good for them?
They are unfortunate people, who failed to see the freedom they had in all the years Musharraf has been ruling.
They also do not realize that after the 9/11, things in Pakistan could have been much worse, if it was not for careful treading by Musharraf. Musharraf was left with very few choices when the dictator America came threatening us with “Either you are with us or against us”. Musharraf only did what was best for the people of Pakistan.

When America says, it will come inside Pakistan and attack to find the Islamist Militants, Musharraf again keeps the national pride of Pakistani people on top, and as a priority, and then decides. Pakistan has very few choices.
But we do not understand the nature of threats that are confronting us. We only are shallow people doing petty politics, for petty gains. We are happy with small achievements of our own kind. Nothing great about us. We are neither learned, nor well-off, nor have brains- albeit we think we are great.
It is a pity. I do not see Pakistan making any progress, because what I see is demolition of whatever progress did take place in the last 8 years, because of one man’s very hard work together with his team.

Institutions can blow with one huff and one puff in no time. Who are they trying to kid in wanting to build institutions?

  6. Mahmood Says:

I really don;t understand your logic. If anything institutions, a framework for social development and civil society are the only benchmarks of true development. Our long term stability, development and success depends on in. Do you really believe that insitutions can be blown away with a puff? If so you really have no concept of what society is built upon.

“Insitutions can blow with one huff… who are they trying to kid in wanting to build insitutions?”

This alone tells me what your level of education is and your mindset. I welcome you to come to the US, Austrailia, Canada or Europe to say the same words in public and see the response from people.
Leaders come and go. Witness the departure of Mitterand, Blair, Howard, Martin. You may not wish to see it but you will also see the departure of Bush, Harper and Merkel. What remains is a system and inherent stability. Individuals and politicians don;t matter.
We want a truly educated society. It comes from such a system and not the other way around.
Think about it a little when you get yourself out of the cave you live in and thow away your books of corrupt governance written by the clown himself - the illiterate Musharraf. Come abroad and mention your support of his style of government, his manner of rule, his intellect, his waffling, his own corruption and looting, his undermining of Pakistan… pleasse come and see for yourself lest you are forever stuck in your delusions.

  7. Farooq Ahmed Says:

I think, Musharraf is the right person for Pakistan right now. We have seen lot of economical growth during his tenure. The only thing which couldnot be handled by his government is terrorim. I think, Terrorism is a world wide issue and Pakistan needs more support to handle it.

I think, if Pakistani people reject Musharraf, they all will regret later.

    Thanks

  8. SBE Says:

You really see economical growth? Tell me where you live becasue everyone I know complain about inflation, prices, corruption and VIP culture. All this despite billions of US aid which is only due to US war on teror. Nothing to do with Mush and his group which are looting wealth. Why is Mush son Bilal running Margalla Housing Scheme when he has no qualification and they say middle class? Why is Mush son occupying New York Stock Exchange seat for stock trading with stolen money? Do you think Pak people are all stupid and believe uneducated dictator who will do anything to keep power- even his martial law is based on lie. The world is laughing at Pak and openly Western papers say he is destroying country and calling us failed state. Why you blindly believe clown dictator. Try to read intl newspapers for real economic figueres like from Economist or American papers. They say there is greater inflation, more debt, higher corruption- don’t listen to politicians but read intl media reports for true picture of instability thanks to Mush.
WHAT WE LEARN FROM UNEDUCATED MUSHARRAF IS THAT CORRUPT GENERAL IS WORSE THAN ANY CORRUPT POLITICIAN

  9. Last Chance Says:

I totally agree. If US and Western countries pump in billions of dollars, then the country will definately show capital growth. It has nothing to do with Musharraf’s eight year rule. The surge in the capital market is only the billions of dollars being circulated.

Although with all the defaulter hoax and stuff, we were far more economically stable then the present scenario. We had the Kressler and Nuclear Sanctions and still continuing towards self-reliance. The Oct ‘99 coup had nothing to do with the national interests and was only focused around Musharraf staying in power. He has proved his lust of power by his attitude towards the judiciary, civil society and lawyers.

We had a similar economic growth at the time of Ayub and Zia. Ayub’s decade of success was celebrated at the time but his legacy was ‘the Great Yahya’ and breakup of Pakistan. Zia’s legacy has been drugs, violence, militants etc. I am sure Musharraf’s legacy is gonna be destruction of all institutions including the Army.
