Fishermen from four islands staged a boat rally Friday to celebrate the PPP’s announcement that chairperson Benazir Bhutto is coming back on October 18.

More than 50 speed boats, fishing boats and trawlers were seen sailing by the four islands - Manora, Baba, Bhit and Sams Pir. Most boats, carrying fishermen and eminent figures of the PPP, left Keamari’s Karachi Port harbour around 3:45 p.m. The fishermen at sea seemed distant at first but they understood what the PPP supporters were chanting and even responded to the slogan: ‘Jeay Bhutto’.

“The Benazir Bhutto-led government had leased out these islands to the local fishermen and rejected offers from multinational companies,” said Abdul Qadir Patel, a possible candidate of the PPP for the National Assembly from Keamari Town’s constituency.

He said that the fishermen of these islands know that only Ms. Bhutto’s government could develop their areas. The PPP government had planned to supply potable water to these islands but it was toppled and no following government planned the same thing. Pakistan’s national flag and the PPP’s tri-coloured flag were seen fluttering on the boats. “Banok Benazir Jaldi Biya,” read a banner inscribed with a Balochi slogan urging Benazir to hasten her arrival. Some of the PPP’s supporters carried her portrait as a symbol of solidarity.

Jamil Soomro, member of the PPP’s federal council, said that it was the first political party rally staged at sea. “We have introduced new trends to the mass mobilisation campaign,” he added.

Zulfiqar Younus, former town nazim of Keamari, said that Friday’s rally is a message from the original residents of Karachi; they will accord a historic welcome to Ms. Bhutto.

Aijaz Durrani and Akbar Mirza of Bilawal House’s media cell cited that the rally of donkey and camel carts was also a show of support from the country’s lower and working classes.

Friday’s rally was also a show of ethnic cohesion because Katchi Sindhi, Baloch and Pashto-speakers largely attended the rally.- [News via DailyTimes]

Sympathy with these innocent people who think that they’ll get their islands back but dreams as BB shall try to find more to lease them to Arabian construction giants like EMAAR and ultimately to fill her banks.

Right now the Generals are looting in a way never before imagined. All the foreiegn aid for the so called war on terror winds up overseas to buy these cowardly clowns hotels and property. Whatever, BB or Nawaz or any previous politician may have looted pales in comparison to what Musharraf and his corrupt cabal are now stealing. Transparency Internatinal rates the current dictastorship more corrupt than either BB or Nawaz. The fisherman may or may not be screwed under BB but they are being screwed right now under the clown Musharraf . He is Pakistan’s biggest emarrassment and liablity. As for Emaar , why can’t they agree to help the displaced fisherman with job creation schemes if they have billions to invest? Also can they not do proper environmental impact studies before building anything. Ket’s face it, we’re a developing country and we can’t turn away from a multi billion investment in our infrastructure and major cities but I too decry the loss of our environment. Let’s just see if an accomodation can be made. At least BB will pretend to listen and speaks intelligently. Musharraf doesn;t know how to speak English and comes across like a retrad in the world every time he opens his illiterate mouth.
