Residents of South Waziristan have found a novel hobby: listening to conversations between pilots of army helicopters on China-made transistors. “You can hear what they say to each other on an FM band. The conversation is interesting at times making you laugh,” one resident told Daily Times by phone. They shared the latest conversation they heard on Tuesday afternoon, when a gunship helicopter and a transport helicopter took off from an army base in Miranshah to pound suspected militant targets after a security check-post in Banda was attacked with rockets. “Hit this vehicle you see,” a scout helicopter pilot said to a Cobra gunship helicopter pilot, who responded by saying, “No. This vehicle seems to be broken down.” The scout helicopter pilot responded, “No. This vehicle is not broken down. Pound it.” “It was an interesting conversation and the Cobra gunship helicopter pilot seemed uninterested in targeting innocent civilians,” a resident said of the conversation. The residents’ joy goes away when the pilots speak English. “We are illiterate people and don’t understand English. It is ok when they speak Urdu or Pushto,” the residents said.- DailyTimes
