President Pervez Musharraf has decided to contact the King of Saudi Arabia over the decision of former Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif return to Pakistan by September 10, which is contrary to the agreement brokered by a profile personality of Saudi Arabia.

Musharraf decided this after holding talks with top aides Friday to weigh up his shrinking options after ex-premier Nawaz Sharif vowed to return from exile to block his re-election plans.

Musharraf, who is fighting for his political life, and close advisers were to discuss proposals by another former prime minister, Benazir Bhutto, for a power-sharing deal that would see him quit as army chief.

“The president is holding further discussions with his top political aides later Friday,” one the aides said on condition of anonymity.

A minister also confirmed the discussions were taking place.

He said Musharraf was trying to “thrash out differences with ruling party leadership, which opposes an amendment which will pave the way for Bhutto or Sharif to hold the prime minister’s office for the third term.”- The News

We are witnessing a dictator going from a weak position to weaker. It a measure of Musharraf’s lack of authority that he now has to go to another nation, in this case Saudi Arabia, to intervene on his behalf in helping him with the domestic issues of Pakistan. It is not only disappointing but disrespectful to the nation of Pakistan that our sovereignty is of so little value to Musharraf. I hope we also don’t see the spectacle of our political leaders asking Saudi Arabia to pressure Musharraf to honour his broken promises about the uniform and stepping down. Why can’t Pakistan’s leaders learn to keep our dirty laundry at home where we can sort out things for ourselves. This highlights the need to respect our laws, constitution and create a civil society. The army must let our politicians govern our nation with two or three cycles of an imperfect democracy in order that we can finally develop insitutions and the sense of a system. People are sick of the revovling door of the military and political parties.
