Pakistan has the talent to lead the Muslim world- we are only holding ourselves back by not developing insitutions. We have the human capital, the resources and the discipline to achieve anything. Hats off to the folks at KAMRA who have made this all possible. Rather than waste our money on expensive foreign acquisitions, it’s heartening to see that we are approaching self sufficiency in our defense needs. I hope that foreign buyers will emerge for the JF 17’s beacuse it will lower the current unit cost from $25 million. Incidentally I read that the unit cost for the SU 30 being purchased by India is $40 million. Large sums of money for developing countries but hopefully in our case it will lead to the greater development of our indegenous airospace industry.

The cost of JF-17 is not $25 million, it is less $12 million, which is far less, and the performance of JF-17 is better than current F-16s in Pakistan. I got to know it through someone, I cannot disclose the name.

I am going by what was written in Air Forces Monthly’s interview with the Director of KAMRA. Look up the June and July editions of Air Forces Monthly published from the UK. It gives a fair amount of detail on the JF 17 as well as changes at KAMRA, and the two rebuild facilities. The interviews were conducted recently. It’s possible that perhaps our official figures for unit costs are different from actual costs. Certainly if the unit cost is less than what has been quoted, all the better for Pakistan. I understand the air force has a requirement for about 250 of these fighters.

Truly remarkable considering the extent of sanctions that Pakistan was placed under. Pakistan now is one of a few handful of countries that can produce its own aircraft. The irony is, that while many claim that it wasnt possible without Chinese assistance(most likely true given China’s extensive industrial base) and I believe its the Chinese who have really benefitted from Pakistan’s ingenius scientist and aeronotical engineers. Ever since the two countries have begun cooperating on different projects, the quality of Chinese arms has incresed exponentially. The aircraft does have considerable export potential and its unit cost is very much an attractive point. Its ironic that a smaller country with limited resources manages to outshine its eastern rival which has yet to develop a comparable aircraft and relies heavily on foreign equipment of diverse sources. What makes things more interesting and has us all anxiously waiting is what will the next development be coming out of Pakistan. Pakistani arms industries are surely poised to offer a refreshing new ‘blood’ to the domineering world of arms producers. These are truly exciting times for all Aviation/Arms buffs who are impressed with what Pakistan has developed in recent years. Looking forward to more developments
