LG Electronics sold more TVs than Samsung Electronics in Korea this year, even though Samsung posted the best worldwide TV sales figures for the first three quarters of the year. Sales figures from reports submitted to the Financial Supervisory Service show LG outstripped Samsung by W100 billion (US $1=W931) this year, with LG posting W810 billion and Samsung W715.3 billion in domestic TV sales as of the end of September.

LG¡¯s sales were up 45 percent from a year ago, but Samsung¡¯s rose by just 37 percent. LG outsold Samsung for the third consecutive quarter this year, with LG posting W248.5 billion and Samsung W204.7 billion in the first quarter, LG W324.2 billion and Samsung W294.5 billion in the second, and LG W237.3 billion and Samsung W216.1 billion in the third.

LG Electronics quarterly domestic sales topped W300 billion for the first time in the second quarter, thanks to a well-timed TV advertising campaign screened just before the World Cup earlier this year for its Time Machine TV, which featured football star Park Ji-sung. Park Si-beom, head of LG’s digital display and marketing department said, “Our excellent domestic TV sales were bolstered by full HD TV and the Time Machine TV, which was launched in May last year and has sold 150,000 units so far. The model allows users to stop in mid-broadcast and resume the transmission later thanks to an inbuilt storage device.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics came top in international sales revenues for the third consecutive quarter this year and also ascended to the no. 1 spot in terms of the units sold worldwide in the third quarter this year.
