This a Pakistani built tank, all of it except its engine is made in Pakistan. The engine is is a Ukrainian 6TDF diesel developing 1,200 hp.engine the same used in T-80/84 tanks.
The Al Khalid tank is based on the Chinese Norinco Type-90-II Main Battle Tank (MBT), Under the initial contract signed in 1990, the Type 90-II was to be licensed produced at Heavy Industries Texila (HIT) but further developments resulted in Al-Khalid, which is tailored to meet the specific operational requirements of Pakistan Armoured Corps.
This is the best suited tank for southern Pakistan’s hot climate during the summer where most of the expected tank battle is supposed to take place.
It has a powerfull 125mm smoothbore gun.
This tank is expected to fight against Indian army T-90, T-72, T-55 and Vickers MBT.
320 Al Khalids have been ordered, 140 have been delivered, the last one will be delivered by early 2008 after which a further upgraded Al Khalid Mark. 1 will enter production, most likely it will have a 1,500hp engine, and better armour.

Thanks for posting this movie clip, after watching it, i spoke to myself that besides all the difficulties faced by the HIT, Pakistan somehow managed to produce these TANKS (Previously Type-90), which gives me great pleasure. But one cannot compare AL-KHALID with the modren TANKS like USA “M1A2 ABRAHAM”, French “LECLER” and GERMAN “LEOPARD”. Al-khalid is not an indeginuous project of Pakistan rather it is a hybrid tank with chinese GUN and loading system, UKRAIN’S POWER PLANT (which still has problems) and automatic targeting electronics mostly from china. Still i consider this a better aproach towards TANK building when compared with the INDIAN’S ARJUN TANK program which was recently shautdown after ~27 years of R&D.

I support the development of an indigenous arms industry above all because self sufficiency for the Pakistani military would be a great asset for the nations overall well being. The nation should move away from foreign arms purchases because ultimately no one will come to Pakistan’s help in her time of need; we have seen time and again that the West and the United States will withold parts and spares for military equipment for Pakistan when it is most needed. Pakistan is not Israel. In the case of war American weapons, parts and munitions will be rushed to this American ally but our supposed special relationship to the US is only a smike screen that our military leaders and politicians use to fool the masses. Pakistan will be the first to be punished in the event any untoward international development. Regardless of whether the Al-Khalid is a hybrid, it is a Pakistani innovation which sets the stage for further arms development. As for the M1 Abrams, the French Leclerc or the German Leopards, they are best suited to other theatres and their costs make them a prohibitive acquisition for the Pakistani military. Having said that, I am most impressed with the German Leopard two. It is based on a very easy to maintain component system with easily exchangeable modules. Moreover it is easy to operate and lends itself to a large number of variants. After all the Germans are the true pioneers of tank tactics and advanced weapons systems. Despite my attachment to all things Pakistani, I would grudgingly say ” Deutsche Panzer sind besser”. I recall reading this in a story about a young German boy staring at an American Sherman amidst the rubble of bombed out German town. Despite all of its technical prowess and engineering marvels, the Germans still lost the Second World War.
